On 28 September 2024, the Honorary Consul of the Philippines to Queensland, Sheryll Gabutero, on invitation by Roselle Tenefrancia (Facilitator) proudly attended Balikbayan Blues A Musical at the Queensland Multicultural Centre. This production highlights the heartfelt stories of Filipino migrants, their struggles, and triumphs abroad. The musical revolves around three “balikbayans” (Filipinos returning home) who reconnect with old friends at a local “sari-sari” store, a familiar community hub in the Philippines. Through shared conversations, music, and laughter, the balikbayans reflect on their experiences in the diaspora, fostering a powerful sense of belonging. Among the actors was Honorary Consular Officer of the Philippines Consulate Office, Gemma Cruz Goutos.
Balikbayan Blues celebrated not only Filipino culture but also the rich contributions of the Filipino-Australian community in the arts. The Consulate’s support for such cultural events underscores their commitment to fostering the vibrant Filipino heritage in Queensland, with local artists and community members being at the heart of this celebration.
The event featured live performances, original songs, and a deep sense of community, making it a memorable night for both performers and attendees.
